Set Up Desktop Voice Typing and Mic Lab
Desktop Settings → Voice controls the speech service used for voice typing. Recent additions include Moonshine for local English transcription and Mic Lab for testing the microphone capture and transcription route used by Enhanced Chat.
Enable voice typing and choose a service
Open Settings → Voice, enable voice typing, and select the speech service you want to use. Check the engine’s installation status and language options. Local engines need their model files installed; cloud services need the corresponding provider configuration. Use a short test prompt before relying on a new selection.
Install and select Moonshine
Open Moonshine and choose Install & use to download the engine and English model. Wait until installation finishes. If already installed, choose Use Moonshine and confirm Selected. This option is optimized for low-latency English transcription and processes microphone audio locally. Use another service when you need a language it does not support.
Open Mic Lab when the engine is ready
Open the Insanely Fast Whisper settings and find Mic Lab once the engine reports ready. Record sample uses the native microphone path and active transcription route used by Enhanced Chat. Speak at your normal distance, finish recording, and listen to the processed audio while checking the transcription. Diagnostic audio stays temporary unless you choose Save WAV.
Adjust and compare microphone tuning
Start with a Starting preset, then adjust Automatic voice boost, Boost sensitivity, and the Low-cut rumble filter as needed. Record another sample after changing the controls. Stronger boost can amplify room noise and echo, so compare the spoken words and background sound instead of aiming for the largest waveform.
Apply the settings and test a real prompt
When the sample sounds right, choose Apply to Voice Typing. Enhanced Chat picks up the saved tuning on its next recording. Record a short prompt there and review the text. Mobile users who choose Desktop transcription use the speech service configured here and must keep the paired desktop connected.
